How Fire Door Hardware Gets Certified as Part of a Door Set

Fire door hardware isn't rated as a standalone product the way it might appear in a catalogue — it's tested and certified as part of a specific door leaf and frame combination under AS1905.1. That means a lock, closer or hinge described as "fire rated" doesn't automatically preserve a door's certification if it's fitted to a door set it wasn't tested with. Swapping in hardware from a different supplier, even a genuinely fire-rated one, can technically void the original door set's compliance, because it's the tested combination that carries the certification, not each component in isolation.

Why Door Closers Matter as Much as the Door Itself

A fire door that won't self-close and fully latch isn't functioning as a fire door, no matter how compliant the leaf and frame are on their own. AS1851 sets requirements for closing and latching speed, and closers drift out of that range over time in ways that are easy to miss day to day. Hydraulic fluid degrades and loses closing force, closer arms lose their adjustment, and in some buildings occupants disconnect or wedge closers because the closing action feels too strong for everyday use — unintentionally defeating the one function the closer exists to provide.

Common Lock & Hardware Faults We Find

Beyond obvious non-fire-rated substitutions, we regularly see holes enlarged or re-drilled to fit hardware that doesn't match the door's original specification, which can compromise the leaf even when the replacement hardware itself is rated. On doors fitted with exit devices, single-motion egress hardware sometimes gets modified or supplemented with additional locking that defeats quick emergency exit. And on doors with hold-open devices tied into the fire alarm system, a mechanism that doesn't release cleanly on activation can leave a door propped open at the exact moment it needs to be closing.

Because so much of this hardware performs its most important job only once, during an actual fire, we recommend it gets the same routine attention as the door leaf itself — checked, tested, and replaced on the same schedule rather than assumed to be fine simply because it still opens and closes normally day to day.
